"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person, in possession of an over abundance of thoughts, must be in want of a blog" - Jane Austen (probably)
Hi everyone! Welcome to my blog space. As an artist, writing is not specifically my forte, but I've always had a fondness for the written word and the ways in which creativity can affect how you put word to paper. I also love organization! I should specify, since my husband might read this, that this organization mostly applies to digital and mental, not physical organization (I swear I will organize the craft/storage room shortly). Anyways, since I'm actually attempting to develop this art passion into an art "career", I have a lot of thoughts bouncing around in my head that I thought might be better laid out in a written format.
Part of this is for my own benefit. I've always been a big note taker. I learn through writing. Writing cements things for me. I used to even re-write all my class notes in college on the computer (leaving space of course for any diagrams, images or graphs I'd made) so I could have beautiful, formalized notes to which I could later refer. I figured, even if I never got a chance to study all the topics, at least I'd been exposed to the material twice. Maybe those exposures would trickle down into recalling facts during an exam! All this to say that I'm hoping that if I write about the experience of building an "art business", it might help me sort through my ideas and find the best paths forward.
The other benefit, I hope, will be for the reader. If said reader is a fellow artist, my goal is that some of what I go through might be helpful to someone who's a few steps behind me and wondering "should I try and sell prints of my work?" or "how do I protect myself from bad commission requests?". If the reader is not an artist, I guess my hope is that there's either 1) useful information that can be applied to what they're working on, or 2) that my "writer's voice" is entertaining enough to sustain curious readership. The third possibility is that the reader is a part of my "family", in which case I believe they're legally obligated to read what I write. Don't ask me, I don't make the laws!
The final disclaimer I will make here is that anything I write is, obviously, my experience alone. There are SO many blogs out there writing about all or some of what I intend to write. I don't think I have the bandwidth to meticulously go through everything out there and find underreported topics or "supremely correct solutions" to every art business problem. What I can do is write about my experiences and decisions and provide context on what I think is working, vs what could use improvement.
With that, I leave you to explore the other posts (or if you're reading this at the very beginning and this is the only one, go forth and enjoy the rest of your day!) and I hope you get something out of this.
